Burst pipe floods Jeffersonville homeless shelter

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) — A sprinkler head burst on Sunday night at Jeffersonville’s Haven House, a homeless shelter, threatening the more than 70 residents who stay there with about three inches of water in the basement. Jeffersonville Police and Jeffersonville Fire Department responded to stop the leak, and several area businesses and charities helped support the people there with food and help.

About 40 men sleep in the basement, which is dry now. Everyone was able to sleep there Sunday night with no problems and they received dinner from outside because they were without electricity to cook.

The shelter says they have a bill to pay ServPro, who helped alleviate the water problem that costs thousands of dollars. The charity Jesus Cares at Exit 0, which offers help to the area’s homeless population, told WHAS11 they also need cleaning supplies, like mops, bleach, and buckets, and laundry supplies, like dryer sheets and detergent.
